Mississippi State Fires Head Coach Zach Arnett
After Less Than a Season on the Job
November 13, 2023
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State has decided to move on from head coach Zach Arnett before the conclusion of his first season on the job, the school announced Monday.
The move comes two days after the Bulldogs suffered a 51-7 loss to rival Arkansas, dropping their record to 4-6 overall and 1-6 in the SEC.
Arnett, who took over the program in December 2022, has been under fire for much of the season due to the team's poor performance. The Bulldogs have been outscored by an average of 24 points per game in their six SEC losses.
Mississippi State athletic director John Cohen said in a statement that the decision to fire Arnett was not made lightly.
"We appreciate Zach's efforts and wish him the best in the future," Cohen said. "We are committed to building a successful football program at Mississippi State, and we believe that this change is necessary to achieve that goal."
Defensive coordinator Tony Hughes will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
